If your dishwasher is on its last legs, or you’re installing a new
dishwasher in a new or renovated home, consider purchasing
an ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher. These highly efficient
models use at least 41% less energy than the federal minimum
standard for energy consumption. You can also save $25 to $35
a year in energy costs by replacing a 10-year-old dishwasher with
an ENERGY STAR qualified model, and save more than 1,000
gallons of water.
Since most of the energy used by a dishwasher goes to heat water, you can reduce your energy consumption with an energy efficient or conventional model by running the dishwasher with a full load. Also, avoid using extra features like heat-dry, rinse-hold, and pre-rinse. Instead, run your dishwasher at night using the more“energy-friendly” air-dry option. Selecting the air-dry option, or simply opening the dishwasher door to let your dishes dry naturally, can save 15% to 50% of the energy used by the dishwasher.
