Water conservation is a top priority in California and equally here in Indian Wells where the Coachella Valley’s desert climate can mean hot temperatures and little rainfall. The City has taken the lead on this vital issue by installing climate controlled irrigation timers in the citywide landscaping areas, planting drought tolerant landscaping, and using recycled and reclaimed water whenever possible. The City also has taken proactive approach to encourage community participation in these water saving measures. The City has collaborated with CVWD to offer reduced price weather-based irrigation clocks.

What You Can Do
Help save water, one of our most precious resources:
Indoors
• Repair leaky faucets
• Replace old toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines with more efficient models
• Clean and peel produce in a large bowl instead of under running water
• Fill your sink or basin when washing dishes rather than using running water
• Consider composting as an alternative to using the garbage disposal
• Run the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full
• Install faucet aerators and low flow showerheads
• Take short showers instead of baths
• Turn off the water while brushing teeth, shaving, and soaping up
• Repair leaky toilets
Outside
• Landscape with drought tolerant varieties instead of grass and other non-native species
• Install moisture sensing irrigation system that will help prevent over watering
• Seasonally adjust the timer that controls your sprinklers so that plants get the right amount of water in cooler months
• Adjust sprinklers to eliminate overspray beyond planted areas.
• Redesign landscaping so that it retains water rather than allowing runoff onto curbs, sidewalks, and roadways.
