Community Garden

 An exciting new resident benefit has come to Indian Wells - The Indian Wells Community Garden.  Community gardens build a sense of community pride and help individuals and neighbors create access to fresh produce and other crops.  A garden also assists in creating a sense of community and connection to the environment and is place to share in a common process and goal; where fellow gardeners share friendship, advice, and garden techniques. A city’s community gardens can be as diverse as its communities of gardeners. Some choose to solely grow flowers while other green thumb experts grow a bountiful harvest of local vegetables.  

Phase 1 of the Indian Wells Community Garden is located on the east side of Eldorado Dr, just north of City Hall and adjacent to the City’s Fire Department.  The 36 garden plots are raised for easier access by reducing the bending over required in gardening and vary in size from four feet by four feet to four feet by ten feet. Each plot is four feet wide for easy maneuvering and gardening from either side of the plot.

Fees are paid according to the size of the plot and are good for the full season. The inaugural garden season will run from March 1, 2010 through August 31, 2011. All future seasons will be from September through August. 

The fee covers the plot, amenities, utilities, and use of facilities. Watering is set on an automatic timer; however, gardeners can water manually from designated hose bibs.

A variety of educational meetings will be held City Hall to provide gardeners information on various topics such as garden design, soils, nutrition, composting, and cooking demonstrations (check City’s website, Public access channel or by calling for dates). Indian Wells’ Community Garden is open to the novice as well as the experienced gardener.  The garden hours are from dawn to dusk seven days a week.
